Well, for those that can focus their attention for a couple of minutes, we'll soon discuss where the oil comes from and what a good product should do to help out with a remedy.

It's all in the glands

People always blame their glands, but this time it's true! Yep, it's the glands that are to blame for the oily, shiny appearance on the surface of your teenage skin. In fact, the little blighters can be found peppered all over the nose, forehead, moving down to the knees and finally on the chin.

When these glands decide to 'kick in' it is time to shine because the sebum produced appears on the skin via the pores.

For boys, it's not so good

A teenage boy's skin can experience a texture change in awareness. This change means that the texture can actually become coarser, and therefore more sensitive to the aforementioned sebaceous glands. Acne is more common in teenage boys because male hormones exacerbate sensitivity in the glands.Teenage girls are luckier

Because of estrogen, the quantities of sebum (oil) is reduced (although I'm sure some teenage girls would have a different view). Depending on the menstrual cycle, this can vary and some often experience an increase of both oil and spots at this time.

So what's the answer?

Well there are several. For girls, remove your make up before going to bed. For all teenagers, avoid picking spots and using harsh medicated products that strip your skin of oil and leave it looking inflamed.

Use products that are gentle and with a good pedigree, for example those founded on education and careful research. There are manufacturers who will go to great lengths to address issues with teenage skin. Consultation with teenagers themselves is one very effective way to find out what works and what does not.

Gaining this understanding appeals to not only skin problems, but also addressing the psychological issues can help teenagers build a better relationship with their skin.

Fruit, veg and plenty of water can help to improve the overall condition of the skin, as well as using cosmetics that are oil, or essentially oil free.
